Last quarter I sat in a Zoom with the founder of a Shopify store doing $1.4M ARR in pet supplements. She showed me her Gorgias bill: $847/month base, plus $1,200 in AI Agent overages at $0.90 per resolved ticket. Her team of two was drowning in "where is my order" tickets, abandoned cart questions, and confused customers asking which supplement was right for a senior Labrador. The Gorgias AI was deflecting maybe 40% of tickets, but every deflection cost her another $0.90.
She did the math out loud: "If this thing works perfectly and handles every ticket, I pay more than my human team costs." That's when she churned and called us.
This is the pattern I keep seeing with Shopify stores between $500K and $5M ARR. Gorgias was built for the helpdesk era and priced for it. Now they bolt AI on at $0.90 per resolution and the unit economics flip upside down for the merchants who need automation most — the ones doing real volume but not enterprise volume. Tidio Lyro hits a ceiling around 5,000 conversations. Intercom Fin charges $0.99 per resolution and assumes you have a CX ops team to babysit it. ManyChat is built for Instagram DMs, not the full Shopify stack.
The pet supplement store moved to SimplyBoost Pro at $169/month, flat. Same number we charge a store doing 800 conversations a month and a store doing 12,000. In the first 30 days her bot deflected 71% of WISMO tickets, recovered $14,200 in abandoned carts via WhatsApp (the channel Gorgias barely touches), and her team went from triaging tickets to actually replying to the hard ones. She kept Gorgias for ticketing because it's still the best helpdesk for Shopify. SimplyBoost runs as the AI agent layer on top. We built it specifically for this seam, because the seam is where Shopify merchants are bleeding money.
What Shopify merchants actually need from a chatbot
Most Shopify stores don't need "AI." They need four things automated, in order of revenue impact:
1. Pre-purchase product recommendations. A shopper asks "do you have this in a size 9 wide?" If they wait 3 hours for an email reply, they're gone. Klaviyo's data shows site visitors who interact with on-site chat convert 3.4x higher than those who don't. SimplyBoost reads your Shopify product catalog (title, variants, tags, description, inventory level, price), and answers in the customer's language. If the size 9 wide is out of stock, it suggests the 9.5 wide or offers to email when restocked.
2. Order status lookups. "Where's my order?" is the #1 ticket category for every Shopify store I've audited. Gorgias publishes this in their own benchmarks — 30-45% of tickets are WISMO. SimplyBoost connects to Shopify's order API and ShipStation/AfterShip. Customer types email or order number, gets tracking, gets ETA, gets a link to the carrier. Zero human required. We deflect 70-82% of WISMO tickets in stores we've onboarded.
3. Abandoned cart recovery via WhatsApp. This is the leverage point most Shopify stores miss. Email recovery rates sit at 5-8%. WhatsApp recovery rates hit 28-45% because open rates are 95%+ within the first hour. SimplyBoost ties into Shopify's abandoned checkout webhook, waits the window you set (we recommend 23 minutes for impulse categories, 4 hours for considered purchases), then sends a WhatsApp message from your verified business number. It can offer a code, answer hesitation questions, or just nudge.
4. Returns and refunds without a human. Customer asks to return — bot pulls the order, checks the return window against your policy, generates a label via Shopify's return API or ReturnGo, and confirms. The whole flow is 90 seconds. A human only gets pulled in for edge cases: damaged items, exchanges across SKUs, fraud signals.
Why the Gorgias and Tidio pricing model breaks for growing stores
Gorgias has been the default Shopify helpdesk for years. The product is genuinely good. But the pricing is squeezing SMBs hard. Their Starter plan is $10/month for 50 tickets. Sounds cheap. Then you scale and the Pro plan is $360/month for 5,000 tickets, plus $36 per additional 100 tickets, plus AI agents at $0.90 per resolution on top. A store doing 8,000 tickets a month with AI handling 60% is looking at $360 base + ~$1,080 in overage + ~$4,320 in AI resolutions. That's $5,760/month before the human seat fees.
Tidio Lyro is cheaper at the bottom — $39/month for 50 Lyro conversations, $499/month for 5,000. The problem is the conversation cap. As soon as you cross 5,000 you're forced into custom pricing, and Tidio's roadmap is clearly aimed at SMB ceiling, not scale.
SimplyBoost flat pricing is $39, $89, or $169/month, unlimited conversations, all channels (website, WhatsApp, Instagram DM, Messenger). A Shopify store doing 12,000 conversations a month pays the same $169 as a store doing 800. The Pro tier at $169 includes Shopify integration, WhatsApp Business API, abandoned cart recovery flows, custom data sources, and webhook actions for returns.
The math is straightforward. If you're a Shopify store between $200K and $5M ARR, flat pricing wins. If you're enterprise doing 100,000+ tickets, Zendesk AI Agents or Intercom Fin with negotiated volume pricing probably still wins. We're honest about that ceiling.
How SimplyBoost connects to your Shopify stack
The install is a Shopify app, not a script tag hack. Approve permissions for products, orders, customers, and draft orders. The bot syncs your full catalog every 4 hours, or in real time via webhook for inventory changes. It respects your localization — multi-currency, multi-language, market-specific pricing.
For WhatsApp, we provision a verified WhatsApp Business API number through 360dialog (or you bring your own Meta-approved number). Templates are pre-approved for cart recovery, order updates, and shipping notifications. You're not pasting Meta API keys into a config screen — it's a guided flow.
For returns, we integrate with Shopify Returns, Loop, and ReturnGo. The bot can issue store credit, generate labels, and trigger refunds directly. You set the rules: 30-day window, original payment method, exclusions for final sale tags. The bot enforces them.
For data residency, EU stores get Frankfurt hosting by default. SimplyBoost is registered in the Netherlands (KVK 87456346), which matters for GDPR-conscious merchants in Germany, France, and the Nordics. ManyChat and Tidio route through US infrastructure.
Honest limitations and where competitors win
Gorgias wins on the helpdesk side. If you need a full ticketing system with macros, SLAs, and team routing, Gorgias is the better tool. SimplyBoost is the AI agent layer — we handle deflection and conversion. We integrate with Gorgias if you want both.
Intercom Fin has better enterprise reporting and a more mature conversation builder. If your team has a dedicated CX ops person who lives in dashboards, Fin is worth the $0.99 per resolution. For lean Shopify teams of 1-3 people, SimplyBoost ships faster and costs less.
ManyChat is still the king for pure Instagram comment-to-DM funnels. We do Instagram DM well, but if your entire funnel is Reels-comment triggers, ManyChat's templates are battle-tested.
Practical recommendation
If you're a Shopify store doing $50K-$5M annual revenue and your top three pain points are WISMO tickets, cart abandonment, and product questions, install SimplyBoost on the Pro plan at $169/month. Connect Shopify, connect WhatsApp Business, turn on the abandoned cart flow with a 23-minute delay and a 10% code on attempt two. Give it 14 days. Track deflection rate, AOV from chat sessions, and recovered cart revenue.
If those numbers don't justify the $169, the Starter plan at $39 keeps the website widget running and you can churn the rest. That's the deal.
